Termed as the “Missile Man of India”, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam is undoubtedly one of the most respected and loved Indian citizens ever. For his unblemished contributions to the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Dr Kalam received India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna in 1997.
Despite of achieving so many things in life, Dr Kalam’s humble nature and down to earth attitude separated him from the rest of the world. His love for kids and young students was pretty much conspicuous and though he was elected as the President of the country, he always fetched some time to spend with youngsters.
Dr. Kalam stepped down as the President of the country in 2007 (succeeded by Pratibha Patil) and his number of public appearances came down with time for obvious health reasons. Yet, whenever he had the chance, he rarely missed an opportunity to meet youngsters and motivate them and clearly, the students loved him more than he could imagine.
He was born in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu in a relatively poor family. He had nothing in his childhood but curiosity and willingness to learn and earn something in lifetime. That will power of his took him to great heights and earned him an enduring and original legacy. Dr.Kalam left his final breath on 27 July 2015 after he collapsed in the midst of a speech at Shillong IIM.
