History made: Elon Musk’s Neuralink implants first brain chip in human

FDA approved human trials last year, seeking participants for a six-year trial, initially focusing on individuals with limb disabilities. Musk claims Telepathy will enable phone and computer control and eventually work with various devices via thought commands.

How does the chip work?

Elon Musk’s startup company Neuralink was established in 2016. The company has developed a sewing machine-like device, which is capable of implanting very thin threads inside the brain. The threads connect to a custom-designed chip with electrodes, which can read data from groups of neurons.

Neuralink says that it aims to make life easier for people suffering from neurological disorders. Before humans, these chips were tested in monkeys. Musk wrote in a social media post on September 10, “No monkeys have died due to Neuralink chip implants.” He said the company chose monkeys that were on the verge of death to minimize the risk to healthy monkeys.

What is BCI?

According to the information given by Neuralink about BCI on its website, people who lose control over the movement of their body parts due to paralysis can get the ability to use computers and mobile phones through the chip. They will be able to do this just by thinking. In the future, these abilities may also extend to seeing, moving hands and legs, speaking, and feeling.

The company says that its N1 chip will be in a shell made of a material that can be safely implanted inside the body. The company says that this chip can withstand “worse and adverse conditions than the conditions inside the body”. The N1 chip has a small battery that can be charged externally, without any wire. For this, a small charger is used which can work from anywhere.
