Breaking News: BJP wins 66 seats out of 67 in Tripura Civic Elections

The ruling BJP hit the headlines as they swept 66 seats out of 67 in Tripura civic byelections by a comprehensive margin. On the contrary, only one went to the CPM, State Election Commission (SEC) said on Friday.

It should be noted that all the four wards of the 49-member Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) were clinched by BJP candidates, leaving two opposition parties -CPM and Congress far behind as far as the vote share is concerned. The single seat won by the CPM candidate came from Panisagar Municipal Corporation but the BJP candidates emerged victorious in remaining 10 seats of the 11-member civic body.

In the middle of allegations of violence including poll malpractice in civic bypolls in 7 urban local bodies held on Thursday, which registered 81.36 per cent voting, the opposition CPM, Congress and Trinamool individually accused BJP of inflicting violence on their supporters and rigging the election.

National Secretary, BJP in-charge of Tripura, Sunil Deodhar was delighted with the result as he took to Twitter to express his opinion. “Again! Great news coming from Tripura! Heartiest Congratulations to @BjpBiplab & Karyakartas of @BJP4Tripura on winning 11 out of 11 Municipal councils & 4 out of 4 seats in Agartala Municipal corporation. @INCIndia & @cpimspeak have lost deposits in almost all seats. @BJP4Indi,” he wrote.

Nonetheless, BJP denied the charges and claimed that the opposition came together to defame the reputation of the ruling party. After when the party was declared victorious, BJP state president and CM Biplab Kumar Deb welcomed the voters saying that the official order shows that the people still have immense belief on the BJP-IPFT led government.

“The people living in civic bodies want the good work taken by the government to continue in their areas too,” he added.

The CPM state committee member Pabitra Kar, however, alleged that “There was absolutely no reason to conduct byelections which has become a farce process. The BJP-IPFT government could have been selected their leaders for the vacant Wards after elected CPM members were forced to resign
