Wife of Jawan martyred in J&K joins Indian army as ‘officer’

In a proud moment, Sangeeta Mall, the wife of a Rifleman who was martyred in Jammu and Kashmir while fighting terrorists in a fierce encounter is inducted into the Indian Army after successfully passing out from the Officers Training Academy in Chennai on Saturday.

It is to be noted that Sangeeta worked as a teacher before marrying Shishir Mall six years ago. The jawan was part of Gorkha Rifles. He was doing the duties at Baramulla sector of J&K when he was martyred while battling terrorists in September 2015.

Following his death, Sangeeta quit her teaching field only to be by her mother-in-law’s side.

Not only did Sangeeta have to deal with the tragedy of her husband’s death but she also experienced a miscarriage. “My mother supported her and encouraged her to study further and do a banking job,” said Sushant Mall, Sangeeta’s brother-in-law.

He also added that Sangeeta became extra motivated to join the army after she attended an investiture ceremony in Ranikhet in 2016 where Shishir was awarded Sena Medal posthumously.

“She worked hard and cleared the OTA examination,” he said. After a tough training at the academy, she was commissioned into the Indian army as a Lieutenant in the short service commission.

Let’s take a moment to salute this woman. Hopefully, her story would inspire other women who are extra-motivated to join the army and to fight for the nation with tonnes of pride, determination and commitment.
