President Ram Nath Kovind, health minister Harsh Vardhan and Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey visited AIIMS earlier on Friday to enquire about Jaitley’s health.

Jaitley was admitted in India’s premier medical institution on August 9 morning and was put on ventilator late in the night.

The 66-year-old leader has since been taking treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). As per a release by media and protocol division of AIIMS on the same day, the former minister is under the complete supervision of a team comprising multidisciplinary doctors. “At present, he is haemodynamically stable”.

A potential lawyer by profession, Jaitley had played a significant part in Narendra Modi’s Cabinet during his first stint as prime minister. He had also held finance and defence portfolios and had quite often acted as the chief troubleshooter of the government.

Jaitley did not contest this year’s general elections apparently because of his ill-health.

He underwent renal transplant on May 14 2018 with Piyush Goyal filling the shoes for him in the finance ministry at that time. Jaitley, who stopped attending office since early April last year, was finally back in the finance ministry on August 23, 2018.

However, in September 2014, he had undergone bariatric surgery in a bid to adjust the weight he had gained because of a long-standing diabetic condition.
