Railways Responds after Passenger complains about Misconduct by Transgenders on Bikaner-Howrah Express

A recent incident on the Bikaner-Howrah Express has put the spotlight back on passenger safety and discipline in India’s general train coaches.

A traveler shared a troubling experience on social media, describing inappropriate behavior by a group of transgenders on board train number 22308.

The passenger, Ibrahim Khan, was traveling from Gaya to Dhanbad in the general coach when he claimed that a group of transgenders misbehaved with male passengers. He posted a video clip showing the group arguing with and allegedly harassing other travelers.

According to Ibrahim, they even exposed themselves by removing their clothes, creating distress and embarrassment among those seated nearby.

He wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

“Today, I was traveling from Gaya to Dhanbad on train number 22308, Bikaner-Howrah Express. In the general coach, some transgenders misbehaved shamelessly with men sitting in front of them, exposing themselves by removing their clothes.”

He tagged the Indian Railways and authorities, urging them to take immediate action. The post quickly drew attention, highlighting concerns about safety, particularly in crowded general coaches where security personnel are often scarce.

In response, Indian Railways acted promptly. Via their official handle, they replied:

“Please share your PNR/UTS number and mobile no. preferably via DM to enable us to take immediate action. You may also raise your concern directly on http://railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in or dial 139 for speedy redressal.”

However, Ibrahim replied explaining that he had a counter-purchased general ticket and did not have a PNR number—a common situation for many passengers traveling in unreserved compartments. He requested that action still be taken on his complaint.

The incident has reignited discussions about security in general coaches, where crowding and the lack of regular patrolling can lead to uncomfortable or unsafe situations for passengers. While this complaint was specifically about misconduct by a group of transgenders, it has also underscored the need to handle such issues without discrimination, ensuring the dignity and safety of everyone on board.

Railway activists and frequent travelers have urged authorities to increase Railway Protection Force (RPF) patrols, install more surveillance cameras, and create clearer complaint protocols that also address the realities of unreserved travel. Indian Railways’ quick response to the tweet shows their willingness to act, but the incident highlights that more consistent and proactive measures are needed to make train journeys safer and more comfortable for all.
