In a recent interview with O2 India, Sonu opened up about his personal equation with the reclusive maestro. While many might assume that frequent collaborations indicate a strong friendship, Sonu clarified that Rahman is far from being a social butterfly. In fact, he described Rahman as someone who keeps his distance — even from those he works with.

“Perhaps, he opens up in front of his older friends, who have known him as Dileep. But I haven’t seen him opening up or having any relationship with anybody. He is not a friendly person. He is just into his work,” Sonu shared honestly.

Sonu recalled how even during their USA tour together, their interactions were limited to polite greetings and formal exchanges. There was no casual chatter, no off-stage bonding. “He doesn’t know how to gossip — and that’s not his drawback,” Sonu explained. “Rahman doesn’t know anything about me or anyone else, because he doesn’t want anyone to know about him either. He is a unique personality.”

Yet, Sonu made it clear that this emotional distance does not come from arrogance or ego. In fact, he had only words of respect for Rahman’s calm and dignified demeanor.

“He does his work and his prayer. He doesn’t behave badly with anyone. He will not hurt anybody’s heart. He won’t speak ill about anyone. He is detached from all of this. He must be attached to his family but I haven’t seen him being very friendly with others,” Sonu noted. “He doesn’t let anyone come close to him. That’s how it should be.”

These remarks might surprise fans who romanticize the idea of strong backstage friendships between iconic artists. But Sonu’s candid comments offer a rare peek into Rahman’s inner world — a world rooted in devotion, discipline, and quiet brilliance. It’s a reminder that not all genius comes with loud friendships or flamboyant personalities. Sometimes, the most extraordinary minds prefer the calm of solitude.
