Udit Narayan is one of the most popular male singers who ruled Bollywood in the 80s and 90s. His soulful voice gave us timeless hits like Falak Tak Chal, Pehla Nasha, Tip Tip Barsa Paani, Main Nikla O Gaddi Leke, and many more.
Born in Bihar’s Baisi village (Supaul district), Udit Narayan has sung in multiple languages such as Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Nepali, Malayalam, Bhojpuri, and more. Over the years, he has won many prestigious awards, including four National Awards.

Recently, Udit Narayan made headlines again — but not for his music. A video of him kissing a fan during a live show went viral, drawing criticism online. The singer had to issue a clarification to defend his actions.
However, this is not the first time Udit has been in controversy. He was once at the centre of a major marriage scandal that seriously impacted his public image.
Udit Narayan’s First Wife Was Ranjana Jha
In 1984, before fame came knocking, Udit Narayan married a woman named Ranjana Jha. At the time, he was not a known figure, and the marriage stayed under wraps. Later, in pursuit of a singing career, Udit moved to Mumbai — leaving Ranjana behind.
Udit Married Deepa Without Divorcing Ranjana
In Mumbai, Udit met fellow struggling singer Deepa. They fell in love and married in 1985 — but Udit never divorced Ranjana. The couple had a son, Aditya Narayan, in 1987.
Ranjana Exposed The Truth Publicly
Years later, Ranjana showed up at Udit’s hotel in Patna with reporters, announcing:
“I have come here to seek justice. He kept me in the dark about his second marriage with Deepa… now I have come to seek my rightful place.”
She further revealed:
“Whenever I threatened to go public about our marriage, he silenced me with the threat of committing suicide. Now I have no fears and I will take legal recourse.”
Initially, Udit denied the claims, accusing Ranjana of trying to damage his reputation.
Udit Finally Accepted His First Marriage
As legal pressure mounted and evidence came to light, Udit eventually acknowledged Ranjana as his wife. He stated:
“I, Udit Narayan, son of Harekrishna Narayan Jha, have accepted Ranjana as his wife and agreed to provide for her maintenance and upkeep.”
Ranjana Chose To Remain Udit’s Wife Along With Deepa
Interestingly, Ranjana did not seek money or alimony. She said:
“I have no complaint or grievances against the singer’s wife, Deepa Narayan, and their son, Aditya… I have not settled for any monetary allowance from the singer. He has agreed to keep me as wife along with Deepa.”
This controversial chapter remains one of the most talked-about parts of Udit Narayan’s personal life.
