Vijay Mallya posts a tweet after RCB lift the trophy for the first time in 18 years

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally ended their long-standing IPL title drought by clinching their maiden trophy after 18 years, defeating Punjab Kings by six runs in a nail-biting final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

It was a hard-earned victory, one that came after heartbreaking losses in three previous finals to Deccan Chargers (2009), Chennai Super Kings (2011), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2016).

But on their fourth attempt, they got it right. And emotions ran high.

In scenes that will be etched in the memories of cricket fans forever, Virat Kohli — the heart and soul of RCB — was in tears, overwhelmed by the moment. With jersey number 18 on his back in his 18th year at the franchise, it felt like destiny had finally delivered what had eluded him for so long. As the camera zoomed in on Kohli and his close friend AB de Villiers — the latter who never got to lift the IPL trophy — it felt like a full-circle moment for fans who stayed loyal for nearly two decades.

Former RCB owner Vijay Mallya, who founded the franchise in 2008, took to social media to share his heartfelt reaction:

“RCB are IPL Champions finally after 18 years. Superb campaign right through the 2025 tournament. A well balanced team Playing Bold with outstanding coaching and support staff. Many congratulations! Ee sala cup namde!!”

In a follow-up tweet, Mallya reflected on his emotional connect with the team:

“When I founded RCB it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru. I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years. I also had the honour of picking Chris Gayle the Universe Boss and Mr 360 AB DeVillers who remain an indelible part of RCB history. Finally, the IPL trophy arrives in Bengaluru. Congratulations and thanks again to all who made my dream come true. RCB fans are the very best and they deserve the IPL trophy. Ee Sala Cup Bengaluru baruthe!”

RCB fans, who have backed their team through thick and thin, finally have their moment. And this time, the famous chant isn’t just hope, it is reality. They are the champions now!
