Uber Responds After Driver Asks for Extra Money And Says “Girls are very miserly”

A new incident involving an Uber driver has gone viral on social media, raising concerns once again about how passengers, especially women are treated.

A female passenger was booking an Uber ride when the driver messaged her, asking for Rs 20 extra to reach her faster. When she refused, the driver told her to cancel the ride. But when she asked him to cancel instead, he didn’t agree.

Things got worse when the woman asked him to simply accept the fare shown in the app. The driver responded with a sexist comment, saying:

“ladki log bahut kanjoos hoti hai” (Translation: Girls are very miserly)

A user named Khozy Bharmal posted screenshots of the chat on X (formerly Twitter) and tagged Uber’s support handles. He called out the driver’s behavior and demanded action, writing:

“Please note the behaviour of your driver partner !! Hope appropriate action shall be taken”

Uber responds

Uber India Support replied, apologizing for the incident. They said:

“Hi there, we apologize for the inconvenience caused by the canceled trip. After reviewing your account, we can confirm that no cancellation fee was charged. We understand how frustrating cancellations can be, and we’ve taken steps to address this, including penalizing drivers who cancelling the trips. Appreciate your understanding.”

But Khozy wasn’t happy with that response. He pointed out that the real issue wasn’t the cancellation—it was the inappropriate comment. He replied:

“It is not about the cancellation of the trip….it’s about the gender-specific remarks by your driver-partner This cannot be tolerated. PERIOD”

Uber posted a follow-up tweet, which reads, “Hey there, we’re really sorry to hear about your experience. We’ve forwarded your concern to the relevant team. You will hear an update from us shortly. Appreciate your patience in this regard.”
