Martyr Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat was the first woman officer of the Indian Navy who was martyred for the country. Who was Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat?
Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat was a resident of the Jhunjhunu district of Haryana and was born into a military family. Her father was also an officer in the Navy, so she inherited the spirit of patriotism and service. Kiran wanted to join the Indian Army since childhood. Her dream was fulfilled in the year 2010. After this, she got married to Vivek Chhokar, who is also a lieutenant in the Indian Navy.
Incident of martyrdom
On 28 March 2015, Kiran Shekhawat was patrolling near the Goa coast in a Dornier aircraft on a routine mission. During this time, due to a technical fault, the aircraft crashed into the sea. In this incident, Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat was martyred. Her martyrdom was recorded not only in the history of the Indian Navy but also in the military records of the entire country as the martyrdom of the first woman officer.
Sources claim that the entire country was proud of Kiran Shekhawat’s martyrdom. She was paid tribute at the national level, and ceremonies were organized in her memory at many places to pay tribute to her sacrifice. A road and a school in her village have also been named after her. Kiran’s sister-in-law, Rajshree, is the first woman pilot of the Coast Guard, who gave her a guard of honor during her funeral, which Rajshree considers the most difficult salute of her service.
Before being martyred while performing her duty, Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat had created history on the Rajpath in Delhi. Two months before her martyrdom, Kiran Shekhawat also led the women’s naval contingent on the Rajpath in the Republic Day celebrations on 26 January 2015. Women are not behind on any front for the protection of the country.
