The Supreme Court has taken an important step regarding the increasing adult content on OTT platforms and social media. The Supreme Court has expressed serious concern over the issue and issued notices to many social media platforms, including the central government. There is a demand to ban obscene content on social media and OTT.

There were continuous complaints about obscene and objectionable content on social media platforms and OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Many petitions said that it has a bad effect on children and adolescents and spreads the wrong message in society. In this context, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court demanding strict rules to stop obscenity on OTT and social media.
According to sources, some people, including former Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar, had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against obscene content. In this petition, the central government has been asked to constitute the National Content Control Authority (NCCO). Also, the petitioners say that all social media platforms and OTT platforms should set guidelines to prevent obscenity.
During the hearing, Tushar Mehta, the Attorney General, represented the central government in the Supreme Court. He argued that the government is not taking this petition seriously. My concern is that children are also getting affected by this. The language of these programs is not only obscene but also perverted. Even two men cannot watch it together. The only condition imposed is that the content is for those above 18 years of age. But this does not mean that children do not have access to this content.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court said that there is no concrete system visible in the country to monitor the content on digital platforms. The Supreme Court made it clear that this matter cannot be taken lightly, as it has a direct impact on the thinking and culture of society. The Supreme Court highlighted the growing harm to society.
