Delhi Metro is not only a convenient mode of travel for millions of people in Delhi-NCR, but it is also one of the most successful metro systems in the country. But have you ever wondered how Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) gets revenue and how much it is? Let’s discuss this in detail.

According to the financial statements of DMRC, the total revenue in the financial year 2022–23 was Rs 6645.06 crore, which includes income from traffic operations, real estate, consultancy, and external projects. On the other hand, the total expenditure in the same financial year was Rs 5833.81 crore.

sources of revenue for DMRC?

The biggest source of income for DMRC is the fare received from passengers. Lakhs of people travel in the Delhi Metro every day, making it a stable source of income. Revenue earned from ‘Traffic Operations’ was Rs 3633.18 crore, consultancy Rs 57.96 crore, real estate Rs 155.17 crore, and external project works Rs 2315.81 crore.

Digital Consultancy works include works on the Dhaka Metro, Gujarat Metro Project, Mumbai Metro, UPMRC Metro Project, Jaipur Metro Project, Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) Metro Project, etc. DMRC also provided technical consultancy for projects like tunneling work of Sleemanabad Canal in Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai Metro, Patna Metro, etc.

Delhi Metro (DMRC) has expanded its network significantly in the last 10 years, which has also led to a significant increase in the number of passengers. However, the exact figures of the annual revenue of DMRC are not available in detail in the available sources. But, with the increase in the number of passengers, it can be assumed that the revenue must have also increased.

This year on New Year’s Day, i.e., 1 January 2024, the Delhi Metro witnessed the highest single-day ridership in the last six years, with over 67 lakh passengers traveling on that day. Overall, the highest-ever daily ridership for the DMRC was in September 2023, when 71.03 lakh passengers traveled by the Delhi Metro.
