Legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan has heaped praise on Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma for his match-winning performance in the second ODI against England in Cuttack, hailing the opener’s emphatic response to recent criticism.
In a blog post, Bachchan celebrated Sharma’s resilience, stating the batsman had “silenced his doubters in the most convincing manner” with his blistering 119 off 90 balls, which propelled India to a crucial victory.

Bachchan’s admiration for Sharma’s knock was evident as he reflected on the cricketer’s journey. “The feet we stand on… the ground it covers… the distances it is used for… and at the end of the day, when it has been given a massage, is the realization of what has been missed all these years,” the actor wrote poetically, alluding to Sharma’s rediscovered form.
He added, “A slight fade in the main event, but the courageous beating given to the Brits in Cricket… simply incredible. The best way to silence criticism is to perform beyond expectation… and Rohit did just that.”
Sharma’s century in Cuttack marked a dramatic turnaround after a prolonged slump. Since September, the vice-captain had struggled across formats, managing just 153 runs in nine Test innings and registering a meager 23 runs in two Ranji Trophy matches last month.
Questions swirled about his future, particularly with the ICC Champions Trophy and India’s Test tour of England looming. Critics speculated whether selectors would retain him, given his inconsistent red-ball form.
However, Sunday’s explosive innings—featuring 15 boundaries and three sixes—reaffirmed Sharma’s pedigree. His 90-ball masterclass not only anchored India’s 381/6 but also showcased his ability to dominate under pressure, steering the team to a series win.
Team India won the series by 2-0, with one game to go. The dead rubber is slated to be held on February 12, Wednesday at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The hosts will be looking forward to inflicting a clean sweep on the visitors.
