Sonu Nigam says A.R. Rahman is a not a “great” singer, read full details

Sonu Nigam has once again hit the headlines with his remarks about music legend A.R. Rahman. In a recent interview with O2 India, Sonu shared his thoughts on Rahman’s singing abilities. He stated that while Rahman is not a “great” singer, he is always in sur (melody).

Sonu explained that Rahman is not a trained singer but has a unique voice texture. “He wouldn’t call himself a great singer, so what can we say? He knows his texture is beautiful, but he has never claimed to be a great singer,” said Sonu.

However, Sonu emphasized that Rahman’s biggest strength is his ability to stay in tune. “He is a great composer, so obviously, he is always in sur. What is the point of a good voice texture if one is not in sur? His voice might not be great, but he is always in sur because he is AR Rahman,” he added.

This isn’t the first time Sonu has spoken about Rahman. Earlier, he had commented on Rahman’s introverted nature and even criticized his music for Yuvvraaj (starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif), calling it bekaar (useless).

Despite this, Sonu also had words of praise for Rahman. He recalled how Rahman gave him creative freedom while working on Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein (Jodhaa Akbar). Sonu proudly shared that he composed a small part of the song, which Rahman instantly liked and retained.

Sonu Nigam and AR Rahman have collaborated on several classics over the years, including Satrangi Re (Dil Se) and Aayo Re Sakhi (Water). Their professional relationship has spanned over three decades, creating musical gems that continue to resonate with fans.

A.R. Rahman, the Mozart of Madras, is one of India’s most celebrated musicians. His incredible achievements include 2 Academy Awards (Oscars), 7 National Film Awards, 15 Filmfare Awards, and 18 Filmfare Awards South, making him the most awarded Indian composer.

Rahman’s global recognition soared after his Oscar wins for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, where he won Best Original Score and Best Original Song (Jai Ho). He also holds multiple Grammy, BAFTA, and Golden Globe Awards, solidifying his status as a global music icon.

Apart from films, Rahman has composed music for the Commonwealth Games, Hollywood films, and Broadway musicals. His influence extends beyond India, making him a true global ambassador of Indian music.
