“Girls should not be given phones as it leads to rapes” – UP Women’s Commission member Meena Kumari

It’s getting scary as days progress and still, there are no guaranteed signs of safety for the girls and women these days. Despite the fact that the Indian government passed an order calling for the death penalty to the rapists, the lethargic legal process for justice to the rape victims often acts as a major setback.

The nation is still carrying an unwanted record which we people are aware of. With so many records to boast about India’s development, their failure to stop rape cases is haunting like hell.

Rape is the fourth most common crime in India. The level of rape cases in our nation rose alarmingly. It is learnt that most of the rape cases were committed by someone known to the victim.

"Girls should not be given phones as it leads to rapes" - UP Women's Commission member Meena Kumari

Meanwhile, a member of the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission identified as Meena Kumari said that girls should not be given phones as it leads to rapes. She voiced her opinion during a public hearing of complaints concerning women in the Aligarh district.

“Girls should not be given mobile phones. Girls talk with boys on phones for hours and later run away with them. Their phones are not even checked and family members are unaware of these things,” Meena Kumari said.

She further added that society itself would have to be serious regarding the increasing crimes against women.

Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission member also said that parents, particularly mothers, have a major responsibility and should keep an eye on their daughters. “Mothers have a big responsibility. Today, if their daughters are careless, then mothers are responsible for that,” she further said.

Anju Chaudhary, who is the vice-chairperson of the commission, added that taking away mobile phones was not a real-time solution to end sexual violence, as reported by TOI.
