It is no secret that some youths from the Muslim community are involved in the heinous practice of Love Jihad, an alleged effort made by them only to target beautiful and rich women belonging to non-Muslim communities for religious conversion to Islam by ‘fake love’.
This infamous concept first came to light in India in the year 2009 with alleged conversions in Kerala and Karnataka. Slowly, it started to spread across all states of India.
The year 2020 has seen many cases of Grooming Jihad. During the course of the year, many Hindu girls became victims of Love Jihad, be it Priya of Meerut or Nikita of Faridabad. Several cases of love jihad emerged in 2020 which exposed hatred against Hinduism. The government passed a bill in view of the rising incidents of love jihad in 2020. The Unlawful Conversion bill has provisions that can land offenders in jail for upto five years.
Let’s look back at a few of the most gruesome Grooming Jihad cases of 2020.
1. Ekta from Ludhiana was killed
Ekta, a B-Com student, hailing from Ludhiana in Punjab, was killed as she fell prey to a trap of ‘love jihad’. The Hindu girl Ekta fell into the trap which was laid by a Muslim boy named Shakib who changed his name to ‘Aman’ in a bid to tilt the girl on his side. It was learnt that at least six people were involved in the murder.
2. Priya became victim of love jihad
A shocking incident of love jihad emerged from Meerut’s Partapur where a mother-daughter duo was murdered and buried at their home by the woman’s lover. The accused was identified as Shamshad who changed his name and hid his religious identity.
Shamshad fooled Priya by claiming that he is a Hindu. He told Priya that his name was Amit but when Priya realised that Shamshad is actually a Muslim she started drifting away from him. The couple started fighting continuously and on March 28, Shamshad killed both Priya and Kashish. Shamshad then buried the bodies of Priya and Kashish in the courtyard of their home.
3. Shalini Yadav converted to Fiza Fatima
Many cases of love jihad came to light from Kanpur, UP in 2020. But the most discussed case was that of a young woman Shalini Yadav who converted to Fiza Fatima. Shalini released a video a few days after she left her home.
Shalini, in the video also claimed that she had changed her name from Shalini to Fiza Fatima and married Mohd Faisal in court of her own will on July 2 in Ghaziabad.
4. Nikita Tomar was shot dead
In the month of October in Ballabgarh in Faridabad district, the killing of Nikita Tomar had left the entire nation in shock. She was shot dead in broad daylight by Tauseef as she fell prey to a trap of ‘love jihad’.
The family said that the Hindu girl Nikita fell into the trap which was laid by Tauseef alias Sajeed. Tauseef had been harassing her for the last two years and pressing her for marriage, which she refused.
5. Neha was murdered
Another case of Love Jihad came to light in Badaun district in Uttar Pradesh where a young Hindu girl was shot dead by her husband Asif on 25 September 2020. This shocking incident left her family reeling in shock. One of Neha’s brother said in an angry tone: “Neha was dead for me the day she went against our wishes to marry that boy… see what he did, he killed her”. The Badaun police, however, arrested the accused Asif on September 27.
6. Anjana became Aisha for Nikah
On 13th October, a woman attempted to self-immolate in front of Vidhan Sabha in Uttar Pradesh. As per the reports, Aisa, previously Anjana, was married to one Akhilesh Tiwari in Maharajaganj. The 35-year-old woman got divorced, after which she fell in love with one Asif and got married to him after accepting Islam. Soon after the marriage, Asif left for Saudi Arabia. The woman accused her in-laws of harassment.
7. Neha was trapped into “love jihad”
In another incident of love jihad, a native of Jammu and Kashmir named Shaukat Ali had trapped a Hindu girl in #LoveJihad under a false Hindu identity. The victim, identified as Neha, alleged that the man claimed to be a Kashmiri Hindu (Sahil Kumar) to lure her into a relationship and marry her. The victim said that following her marriage, Shaukat Ali forced her to convert to Islam and physically assaulted her along with his family.
Neha uploaded a video on social media in which she revealed that the local police did not help her in this matter. Later, the accused and four others were arrested, following her complaint.
8. Shibu Ali trapped a Hindu girl in Love Jihad
A story of love jihad where a man named Shibu Ali posed as Sachin Sharma and trapped a Hindu girl in Love Jihad. The victim said that Shibu Ali met her about 2 years ago and he concealed his identity to lure her to convert her religion to Islam. Shibu told her his name Sachin Sharma and took her to the temple and assured her that he is a Hindu and then fraudulently took her to Noida.
When the man’s Muslim identity was revealed, he started torturing her. Shibu beat her up and pressurised her to convert to Islam. He also forced her to consume beef, which is a sin according to Hindu customs and pressurised her to engage in sexual activities with a cleric.
9. Pooja Patel committed suicide
In yet another case of suspected Love Jihad, one Pooja Patel, a resident of Varanasi married to Mohammad Aftab Siddiqui of Lucknow, committed suicide by hanging herself in her house.
Pooja’s mother Kiran alleged that the problems started when Mohammad Aftab’s mother came to live with them in Varanasi. She started exerting pressure on Pooja to practice only Islam inwardly. She insisted that Pooja reads Namaz 5 times in a day. Moreover, Pooja’s in-laws pressurised her to quit modelling and acting as they thought it to be un-Islamic.
10. Minor girl was raped by Khalid
In Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, another case of Love Jihad was reported where a minor girl was allegedly cheated, raped and blackmailed by a Muslim man pretending to be Hindu.
The girl was befriended by a man claiming to be a Hindu named Aman. The man even went to temples with her to win her trust and used to tie a ‘Kalawa’ on his wrist. He eventually raped her and got the incident video recorded. Later, the girl came to know that ‘Aman’ is actually Khalid.
There have been numerous cases of such ‘Love Jihad’ where Hindu girls, often from a vulnerable age group, have been trapped into relationships by Muslims faking a Hindu identity, only to be raped or blackmailed later.
