Not Ram, but Laxman becomes National Crush as Doordarshan retelecast 80s Ramayana

Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan is being re-run on Doordarshan these days in order to keep people entertained during the coronavirus lockdown.

Ramayan is a TV serial that was aired on Doordarshan back in 1987. It was aired for almost 1.5 years and then came to an end. This show is based on the life of Lord Rama. The story revolves around Lord Rama and showcases his entire life.

The government decided to extend the current lockdown for another 19 days to prevent further spread of the COVID-19 outbreak which will end on May 3. Due to the lockdown, all of the industries have shut down their businesses including the entertainment industry. The shooting of movies and TV serials have been postponed. So the government decided to re-telecast this epic show in this time of crisis.

Meanwhile, a video is widely circulating on social media in which veteran actor Sunil Lahri, who played the role of Lakshman in the epic show, can be seen watching the epic show at his home.

In the episode, he watched Meghnad/Meghnath being killed by Lakshman. Vijay Arora played the role of Meghnad Indrajeet in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan. In the epic show, Meghnad Indrajeet attacked Lakshman (Sunil Lahri) on his second day at the fight. It is to be noticed that Meghnath is the son of Raavan (played by veteran Gujarati actor Arvind Trivedi).

Indrajit subdued both Rama and Lakshman, and later incapacitated Lakshman in their second encounter. He had crushed the pride of the Devas in heaven, and when Indra had captured Ravana in a fight, it was Meghnad who had freed him.

Lakshman gets injured in the battle and becomes unconscious. on ‘Vaidya ji’s’ (doctor) suggestion, Hanuman ji goes to Himalaya mountain to get ‘Sanjivani booti’ (medical aid) to cure Lakshman.

As the epic show hit Doordarshan channel after a long period of time, it gained instant popularity across the country. Ramayan has become the most watched Hindi serial at present as people are staying indoors amid the shutdown.

Meanwhile, a user shared Sunil Lahri’s old picture on social media, in which he is looking quite young. In the picture, Sunil Lahri is seen posing with a broad smile in a black shirt. The post has garnered thousands of likes.

It is amazing to see that DD National (Doordarshan) has grabbed the top position in TRP ratings. The reason behind it is that all the old iconic shows such as Mahabharat, Ramayan, Byomkesh Bakshi and others are coming up on television on public demand. Doordarshan has caught every viewer’s attention and topped the TRP ratings during the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
