Gambhir gives angry reply to ESPN cricinfo for praising MS Dhoni’s Six

Just a couple of days ago, former India opener and current Member of Parliament (MP) Gautam Gambhir launched a scathing attack at popular cricket website ESPNCricinfo for their tweet on the 2011 World Cup final.

Gambhir ended up as the top run-scorer in that match with a gritty 97 after India lost big wickets like Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli early on in the innings. Gautam Gambhir stuck to his gameplan and went about his business.

While every Indian fan rejoiced the anniversary of India’s 2011 WC triumph, it was Gautam Gambhir’s tweet that drew attention.

“Just a reminder @ESPNcricinfo: #worldcup2011 was won by entire India, entire Indian team & all support staff. High time you hit your obsession for a SIX,” Gautam Gambhir tweeted.

While Gautam Gambhir’s grit and determination in the crunch situation of the world cup final was well and truly great, it was indeed a collective team effort. Gambhir had also explained the same reason for such a tweet. But a few of the fans hit out at him for the same reason.

Also, in a previous interview, Gambhir blamed MS Dhoni for his dismissal. MS Dhoni had reportedly reminded Gambhir that he needed just three runs to get to his century, which had distracted him and subsequently led to his dismissal.

But this is all about Gambhir’s tweet. While he is right about the fact that the entire team won, everyone will remember three moments from that match – the Indian team lifting Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulders, Yuvraj Singh breaking down after the win, and Dhoni’s six. Some people remember Gambhir’s 97.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s simplicity and honesty have never been in doubt. The down-to-earth personality is a huge inspiration to all the cricket followers. Known for the knack of captaincy, wicketkeeping, batting traits, swift stumping, quick running between the wickets, last ball six, helicopter shots, ICC trophies and so on, his contribution towards Indian cricket is so good that it cannot be put it in words.

MS Dhoni is the only captain in the history of cricket to have won 3 ICC trophies – ICC World Cup 2007, ICC World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013. Even after given up international captaincy on January 4, 2017, he still has extended his services as a wicketkeeper-batsman.

He has always worked behind the scenes to offer some crunch tips to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the deciding phase of the game. Sometimes we just run short of adjectives to describe MSD in one word. He has done so much for India and is still extending his valuable contributions to the Indian cricket team.

The bat which MS Dhoni hit the winning shot for a six against Sri Lanka in the World Cup 2011 final was auctioned for a staggering price of Rs.72 lakhs. The aim was to raise funds for MS Dhoni’s wife Sakshi’s charitable organisation, ‘Sakshi Foundation’ that works for underprivileged children in India. The bat was purchased by RK Global, an investment group.
