Shocking: At least 19 killed in bus-truck collision in Tamil Nadu

In a shocking incident, at least 20 people have died in a collision between an omnibus en route to Kerala and a container truck near Avinashi town of Tirupur district, Tamil Nadu on Thursday morning.

Passengers were traveling on a bus operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) from Bengaluru to Ernakulam. Just then the accident took place on the National Highway near Thirumuruganpoondi around 3.40 a.m.

A tiles-laden truck coming from Kerala entered the wrong side as it lost control, resulting in the collision with a bus going to Kerala from Bengaluru. The truck was reportedly running on the wrong side of the road.

A total of 48 passengers were traveling on the bus and the driver lost his life on the spot after the bus met with an accident. The accident claims around 20 lives and has caused massive damage to the bus. 

Police personnel and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot for the rescue operations. During the rescue, more than 20 passengers were rescued and were rushed to Tiruppur and Avinashi Government Hospitals as well as private hospitals in the vicinity.

Deputy Tehsildar of Avinashi said, “19 people, including 14 men and 5 women, died in the collision between a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus and a truck near Avinashi town of Tirupur district.”

Tiruppur District Collector K. Vijayakarthikeyan visited the accident site on Thursday morning. While speaking to the media, he said, “Most of the passengers were from Kerala, the deceased and the injured will be identified after cross-checking with the list of passengers”.

Injured passengers are being treated in the hospital and the deceased are being identified.
