7 yrs after Nirbhaya incident, a Delhi court issued death warrant for convicts

Seven years after Nirbhaya died, a Delhi court has issued death warrants for the hanging of four convicts in the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case. Four convicts are scheduled to be executed on 22 January at 7 am at Tihar jail.

The four convicts Mukesh Singh, 32, Pawan Gupta, 25, Vinay Sharma, 26, and Akshay Kumar Singh, 31, were informed of the order via video conferencing and will be hanged at Tihar jail. Victim’s mother expressed her views on the verdict, stating that “This judgement will reinforce people’s faith in the judiciary and empower women. My daughter has got justice.” Her mother had petitioned for a death warrant, and had waited seven years for justice. Finally, the victim has got justice after 7 years. As the verdict came, everyone was filled with emotion.

The incident took place on the night of 16 December 2012 when the victim and her friend were returning home after watching the movie. They boarded a bus from south Delhi. Her friend was beaten and she was brutally raped by a gang of four people while the bus was running and tortured with an iron rod. They then threw her on road, naked and bleeding.

Earlier during the hearing, the prosecution said there was no application pending before any court or the President right now by any of the convicts and the review petition of all the convicts was dismissed by the Supreme Court. The court said the convicts can use their legal remedies within 14 days.
