Son of Lift Operator scores 89.5%, let’s appreciate this boy

When poverty forced Bharathan to skip studies once and for all, the aspiring student with enough will power defied all odds and scored good marks in the board examination. Usually, when board exam time, most students feel the pressure from parents who force them to study round the clock.

But K Bharathan’s scenario, it was quite the opposite for him as he had to convince his parents to let him study.

Bharatahan’s family finds it very tough to make ends meet. His differently-abled dad works as a lift operator and his mother is a daily wage labourer. His elder sister, who has studied till Class XII, is about to get married but the family doesn’t have enough cash.

“We wanted him to work as we needed money for the wedding. But with the kind of marks he has got, we will not say that again. He has always been telling that he wants to be an engineer.

But for people like us who cannot even afford to host a wedding, I do not know how I will be able to make him study,” said emotional K S Kumar, Bharathan’s father.

When Bharathan chipped in with 537 marks out of 600, he was yet to talk to his mother as she was away, working as a helper at a marriage hall for the past two days. When his father conveyed good news to his mother, she felt very happy.

“My father spoke to her and he told me she was very happy,” said Bharathan.

He is also the only one among 4,833 corporation school students to have scored a centum in computer science.

Bharatahan recalled his childhood days when he saw computer for the first time. Despite not having computer at home, he somehow managed to learn some fundamentals with the help of his teachers.

“I saw a computer for the first time in Class V. We do not have a computer at home. But I somehow managed to learn with the help of my teachers,” he said.

Living in single room home for rent at Choolaipallam in Nesapakkam, Bharathan explained that his journey had just started as he has to plenty of work to do to better in his Class XII exams.
