Ganga will be cleaned in 2 years from now: Union Jal Sakthi Minister

Reacting to the huge backlash over ‘Namami Gange’ project failing to show developments and results, Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the capacity building programmes were underway and that the changes will be clearly seen in the next 2 years.

Shekhawat said the government’s constant efforts alone would not be enough as it requires people’s participation for the restoration and conservation of the Ganga.

“It is being asked why Ganga has not been cleaned in the past four years. The capacity building programmes are going on at full speed. As many as 98 of the total 298 projects undertaken had almost been completed,” he said.

“In the next two years, you will see significant changes.”

“People need to understand the usefulness of the river. We need a partnership between government and people. There should be a public movement.”

Shekhawat also claimed that deaths because of filth have decreased to one lakh deaths annually now from three lakh before 2014 due to the Swachh Bharat mission.
