70-yr-old Grandma cleaned 52 beaches in One Year, let’s salute her

Humans are doing everything to make the planet look from bad to worse. They have already taken the world in a wrong way barring little positives. Because of them, the planet is experiencing a massive change that can cause some serious effect in the later stages to come.

At one end, man is reaping benefits with the technology, natural resources– and at the other end- he is destroying the environment and other life forms which is truly not acceptable at all.

But there are only very few people who get into action to clean not just for pride but the love that they have for the environment. The phrase ‘A stitch in time saves nine’ comes into play. If every individual does the job by putting all the wastes into the dustbins at the right place and at the right time, then a mass clean-up operation wouldn’t have followed its way.

Pat Smith, a citizen of Cornwall, UK, learnt the existing problem of pollution and hence she decided to take the matter in her own hands. In an age where most of the grandmothers are sitting at home and watching TV serials and movies, this 70-year-old grandmother from the UK saw a documentary about plastic pollution and got really bothered about the issue.

Seeing this, she then sprung into action to do her contribution by cleaning up one beach per week. She has also initiated a campaign called The Final Straw, her mission is to create, share and spread awareness of the uselessness and harm of ‘plastic straws’ and to make her hometown Cornwall, as well as, the rest of the world plastic straw-free.

Drinking straws need to be disposed of in the dustbin but some people are least bothered to care about cleanliness and environment as they litter in the place where they are not supposed to. These straws finally end up in landfills and oceans and thereby, causing a major threat to marine life.

Locals in her hometown of Cornwall backed her idea and along with some volunteers and her grandchildren, Pat Smith fulfilled her vision and cleaned up 52 beaches of Cornwall in 2018. She didn’t stop here as she has continued on with her major mission to make the world a better place.

Pat Smith is setting a great example that it is never too late to take care of the planet.
