In case you didn’t know

In India, the electric-vehicle revolution is making better progress. Overall, it has 1.5 million battery-powered three-wheeled rickshaws, which is bigger than the whole number of electric passenger cars sold in China since 2011. This goes to show that India is fighting against pollution, leaving China far behind in the fight.

The drivers of three-wheelers sneaking through crowded, smoggy streets learnt that e-rickshaws are quieter, faster, cleaner and economical to maintain than a conventional auto rickshaw. They also are more effective than cycle rickshaws, thereby more rides are possible in a day.

As many as 11,000 new e-rickshaws hit the streets every month and annual sales are likely to hike about 9 per cent by 2021. According to consulting firm A.T. Kearney, Three-wheeled vehicles make up a 51.5 billion market, and manufacturers of electric versions- Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd and Kinetic Engineering Ltd. as well as smaller outfits that assemble parts imported from China.
