Kashmiri kid designs a pen that can count words you write on paper

Every student has a pen in pocket and one can say that he or she is the proud owner of the pen. When we talk about a pen, it brings good memories. It reminds us of a ballpoint pen, gel pen, fountain pen. But have you heard about counting pen? The one that keeps a word count while writing. How about that for a super cool invention! The interesting feature will change the way you use your pen. Thanks to this 9-year-old boy by the name of Muzaffar Ahmad Khan.

At an age when children buy pencils, rubber, sharpener and scale, this class 3 wonder boy from Gurez valley in northern Kashmir invented a pen that keeps track of the number of words written. The pen comes with a crunch casing which is firmly attached to its rear. Muzaffar said that the word count is displayed on a small LCD monitor attached to the instrument.

According to him, the word count can also be displayed on one’s mobile through a message. “It is a pen with a casing attached to its rear. Once someone starts writing, it keeps a track of the word count, which is displayed on a small LCD monitor attached to it, said Muzaffar, a student of class 3. What’s more, the word count can also be displayed on one’s mobile phone through a message, says the boy.

Where it all started..

Muzaffar has a specific reason behind the invention. He told news agency ANI, he got an idea of a ‘counting pen’ when he got poor marks in an exam, as he could not manage the necessary word count.

“In my last exam, I got minimum marks as I wrote fewer words. It made me restless and from that very time, I started thinking of inventing something which can save my time and finally ‘counting pen’ struck my mind,” Muzaffar said.

Plenty of people appreciated this invention and in fact, a prototype of Muzaffar’s ‘counting pen’ has been displayed at the Festival of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, organized by National Innovation Foundation (NIF), an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology, at the famous Rashtrapati Bhavan. At the festival, President Ram Nath Kovind hailed him and rewarded young Muzaffar for his impeccable innovation.

The ‘counting pen’ will soon hit the market and will be commercially available. Muzaffar says ‘counting pen’ will help students during their exams when they have to maintain the required number of words in essays and detailed questions.
