Shocking: 5-year-old girl dies after ventilator runs out of Oxygen

In a shocking incident that is hard to take it to heart, a 5-year-old girl in Chhattisgarh passed away after the ventilator completely ran out of oxygen. The girl, identified as Bulbul Kudiyum was admitted at the Bijapur district hospital after being diagnosed with severe pneumonia.

The patient was on full ventilator support but the cylinders ran out of oxygen, forcing the hospital to shift her to Jagdalpur Medical College Hospital in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district, located 160 Km away, an official said in a statement. Unfortunately, she drew her last breath in the ambulance with no medical attention.

“Generally it requires one oxygen cylinder to shift patients from Bijapur to Jagdalpur. We will investigate how it got exhausted so quickly,” Dr Pujari told news agency PTI.

“If the driver had contacted Bijapur health officials in time, they would have arranged for an oxygen cylinder from nearby ambulance services,” he said.

It is learnt that the ambulance driver had reportedly called staff at Tokapal’s local government hospital for a replacement of oxygen cylinder but was allegedly denied, Chamru Kudiyam, the girl’s father, said.

The child’s father alleged that negligence on the part of the hospital resulted to his daughter’s death. “The oxygen exhausted in the cylinder when the ambulance was nearing Tokapal. The driver had tried to arrange for another cylinder from Tokapal hospital but the staff there refused. There was no technician in the ambulance either,” Chamru told reporters.
