Police sets bad example, asks bribe to Martyr’s mother to register an FIR

In an incident that highlights police lack of enthusiasm in our country, a martyr’s mother was asked to pay a bribe in a bid to get her son’s stolen medals back. This incident happened in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, where family members of late Captain Devashish Sharma came to know that their son’s Kirti Chakra and Virata Chakra medals were stolen in a robbery.

Captain Sharma lost his life during Operation “Rakshak” against Pakistan back in 1994. At that time, he was deployed with the 26 Punjab Regiment. He was well known for the knack of displaying immense bravery. He was just 25 years old.

The family quickly contacted the police and explained what had happened and then filed an FIR to get the robbery investigated as soon as possible. But the Captain Devashish’s mother Nirmala Devi Sharma was left disappointed with the way how police replied. According to Nirmala Devi, the police asked them for a ‘bribe’ to start investigating the matter or drop the case.

Police set a bad example for doing such an act instead of helping the family. The entire family was left shocked by the police’s response and were confused about taking the next step. “My son won’t come back, at least return his honour,” Nirmala Devi Sharma, Mother of Captain Sharma told.

CNN-Network 18 reported the matter and broadcasted on their news channel. Soon after the shocking incident was depicted by the media, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bhupendra Singh quickly took up the matter up and visited Captain Sharma’s house.

He then assured the family that their case would be taken up seriously to investigate the robbery. He further added that the police would examine the stolen medals case. Madhya Pradesh CM meanwhile has said that the guilty officials would be suspended.

“Forget about original, all I want is duplicate medals. I will be really thankful to govt if they help me: Nirmala Sharma,” Martyr’s mother told ANI.
